Default Gas Gauge.

I just got a 92 F150 last week, and I have noticed the fuel gauge varies dramatically as I accelerate and decelerate(like it will drop a good 1/4-1/3 and return to normal as I come up to speed.). Is this normal? most of the other vehicles I've driven do not have such active gauges.

the only time my truck does anything close to that much movement is when i let it sit over night then start it in the morning. the gauge is usually at the most a 1/8th below what the tank actually has in it, but the first bump or quick turn fixes the problem and it goes back to where it should be. im sure i need a new float in the tank or something but it hasn't gotten me stranded yet so ill let it pass for now. your problem sounds a little more severe so you may need to replace the float.

Both of my ford pick-ups have had movent in the fuel level when driving around. If it still reads when there no reason to go through the work of dropping the tank.

Yeah, it's not a big deal, and I'm not even worried about it until I have some other reason to drop the tank.

If it stops working... take the bed off the truck. Heavier lifting but easier to work on.
