A weird rattling noise
I have a 1990 f-150 with the 302. it has around 98k miles. Truck just passed emissions. the lifters (I think) rattle like crazy when I try to accelerate. sometimes a puff of white smoke comes out at the same time. the truck doesn't idle like it should and sometimes cuts off at stop lights. I have to keep the gas pedal pushed in a little to keep it from stalling. any guesses on what's going on?

Lifters generally rattle all the time when they rattle; you could more likely have a timing issue - preignition probably. You mentioned it just passed emissions; did somebody mess with it (like spout out or change the timing to help it pass) and then not put it back the way it was ? I'd look at the timing first off.

no one messed with it. they did ask me to press on the gas to bring up the rpms so the machine could read better. my check engine light comes on and when I gas it a little or get on it, like going up a hill or something, it'll go off.

Time to pull the codes. Check engine light acting like that sounds (to me) like it could be a dpfe sensor (if your truck has one). Not basing that on anything specific, other than that's what my 95 SHO did (not the rattle part, just the light) and that was due to a bad dpfe
