Truck won't shut off?
Alright, I've acquired a 91 f150 with the 300 and 5 speed 4x4. I have finally got this thing running perfect, but now it won't shut off? Has a brand new distributor, cap, rotor, and ecu/pcm installed by previous owner. I installed new plugs and wires, did the timing, ignition coil, key lock cylinder, and ignition switch. The fuel pump runs after priming, But not when the key is back. When you bring the switch all the way back, it starts running kinda rough and all the accessories turn off, but it stays running. You can remove the ignition switch and it still runs. I'm clueless guys, any help? Don't be afraid to question the integrity of an install done if you have any ideas that'd be great! Thanks!

My truck did this once. Mine was a little different though. Mine would just turn back and everything would run as before. My problem was a broken actuator rod that is the link between the key cylinder and ignition box. They are some type of fiber plastic with a metal piece in the end, and the plastic breaks around the metal. Maybe yours isn't completely broken, but is flexing really bad and not pushing the ignition switch on the box itself all the way to the off position. Has your truck been doing this before? Have you messed with the key cylinder? There are little gears somewhere around the key cylinder (it's been a couple years and I can't fully remember the job) that can get off aligned, but only if a tooth broke ( unlikely) or is some one pulled it out. I think all it is is a gear that is turned by the key cylinder and rides in a tether groove on the actuator rod. Sorry for my vague info, like I said its been a couple years. To do this job you have to tear apart the steering column. Harder if you have tilt like me, but I don't remember it being too awful of a job, but it wasn't super easy either. The tilt spring was a pita. I would look into this and see if it seems to be your problem.

Thank you guys for your timely replies! That's what I'm saying chris! It defies the logic in my head haha there's still power to the coil and fuel pump I guess, but I can't understand how? And Brandon, I've already been diving into that ignition crap. Did the new lock cylinder, checked that actuator rod and replaced the ignition switch (as in the box at the bottom of the column). I even removed the new ignition switch from the column and controlled it with a screwdriver the way the rod does, that way I could take all the column stuff out of the equation, and the thing still runs. I went so far as to unplug the ignition switch, and it still runs. I don't get it, I'm thinking maybe a faulty ecu? Is it possible the ecu is still putting power to the system regardless of the switch?

Yeah, that's what I thought. So I replaced the solenoid and hooked the wires up the way before and still no luck. Unless it was hooked up wrong before, there would be power to almost everything all the time, because the constant to the power is hooked up on the right side along with everything else. That starter wire is the only one on the other (left) pole.

You've got a wire crossed or hooked up to the wrong place somewhere most likely. I'd suspect at the ignition switch - if the ignition switch itself isn't faulty.
Looking up a wiring diagram would help and then get out your test light and start following the current back.
Also, don't assume a new part is good and therefore can't be the problem.

If you can get to the coil try unplugging it after you shut the truck off. Or if there is a fusebox for the mains, pull the ignition fuses. If it shuts right off, then your problem is narrowed down further.

I have been operating the ignition switch on and off the column, and it still runs. I thought maybe the new one was faulty too, but then I actually unplugged the ignition switch as it was running, and it stayed running. At least from my knowledge of it, the should shut it off, right? It definitely still gets power to the coil because I unplugged the coil to kill it once and it shocked the **** outta me haha.
