Default Transmission Speed O Gear Cog

Speedometer not working had the speedometer checked and tested ok, but was told it was probably the speed o gear cog in trans "Plastic Cog" needs replacing. I have a 1988 Ford F-150 4x4 with an automatic wondering how hard is it to replace or do I have to take it to the Pro's to have it done. and does anyone know what the part number I would need to order it.

You pull the driveshaft and the tailshaft housing and pull a snap ring, then the gear pulls off. There is a little ball bearing that fits into an indent on the tailshaft that keeps the gear from spinning on the shaft so make sure you don't lose it. My gear split so it was spinning on the shaft and the speedometer wouldn't work.
