I need to change the transmission fluid in my truck. It's a 1992 f150 5.0 it's got an e4od I think, the tranny code is E. How much fluid will I need and what kind? And what filter kits are good?
I've also been thinking about a shift kit, should I get the electronic kind or the original kind?

As far as fluid goes, go for a high mileage fluid if you can. I'm using Valvoline Maxlife in my truck and it shifted so smooth after changing, it's scary. I hear that E4ODs respond well to Castrol High Mileage ATF as well.

As far as a shift kit, I won't address that because that's not something I'm into. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it is my thought. Hopefully, someone else will chime in on that.

Also, another thing I did was since I have a 2wd, I swapped out my pan to a 4R100 pan with a drain plug and a reusable 4R100 pan gasket. Changing fluid is a breeze now.

So the pan on the e4od is the same size and everything as the 4r100?

sorry to steal the thread will the 4R100 work on a 4x4? and any idea of where to get one?

tjdirt: Yes, the 4R100 pan will work on the 2wd truck. It's the same size and everything. This is what I have on my truck.

jstuhlman: The 4x4 pan is a little deeper and even though the 4R100 pan will bolt up, the pan capacity of the 4R100 is a little less than the 4x4 E4OD stock pan. Also, the transmission filter for the 4x4 E4OD is different than the 2wd filter and the difference is to account for the 4x4 pan being deeper. I'd recommend the 4R100 pan on a 2wd but not a 4wd. The swap can be done if you're ok with your transmission holding less fluid and using a 2wd filter.

You can get a pan off of something like an Excursion or Expedition at a salvage yard if that's the route you're going to go. I bought a brand new Dorman pan and a reusable rubber gasket with a steel frame from Napa. I can provide part numbers if it's anyone is looking to go the route of buying new.
