Default headers vs. manifold

Hey i noticed a pretty good sized crack between my #6 and #7 cylinder on my exhaust manifold. since it needs to be replaced i was thinking of just going with headers. I relized headers cost alot more money and will probably be alot harder to install than a manifold. is the extra cost and work installing going to be worth the added power i get from ther headers, or should i stick with a manifold?

Shorty headers aren't really worth the money in my opinion, very little gains if any. Long tube headers will gain you a noticeable amount of torque on the low end along with some mid range ponies. Just keep in mind to do long tubes you'll need an exhaust shop to mate up the headers to the stock exhaust or run your own exhaust all the way back.

Not to mess up your question, but has anyone noticed an increase in fuel mileage with headers...being long or short? thanks.

well i got shorty headers for my 351...they aren't gonna be any easier than putting manifolds in. Its nice because everything lines up and you can use stock exhaust. if you pipe it...it willl sound real nice too.

Ive been looking into this for a while(5 months), since Im going to put headers on mine one day. And just to break it all down from my research I found that it seems shorty headers are pretty much just an expensive exhaust manifold and you really dont get any gains out of them and they sound nothing like long tube headers.

i Just finished putting an exhaust in my 95 302, i put Shorty headers with a magnaflow y pipe with magnaflow muffler. shorty headers will give you 8-10HP at the wheels, along with a High flow cat you can look at 15HP across your power band. but when u try to match a y pipe to the headers make sure u can make it yourself. the one i bought i had to heat up and bend 5 times to get it to line up correctly and even after that im still putting gaskets at those points because they leak. also if you put any type of headers on Be SURE to put back on the Stock heat sheilds or you will damage your spark plug wires.

a 302 or 351 order a set of flowtec long tube headers they cost $300.00 Canadian they bolt right up no questions asked i have put they on my 2x4 and my 4x4 and never had a problem they send 2 new gaskets and all the new header bolts to bolt them right up ... if your keeping your stock exhaust you wil have to get a new y-pipe bent up the fix the long tubes. i went with duel straight pipes my self cost me 40 buck to get the pipe and get it bent and 80 bucks for the cherry bomb glass packs with turn downs sounded amazing. they give you 1-2 mpg i think it is and 10-15 hp

Im not saying that I dont believe you but I cant see how it comes up with 8-10 HP in about 12 inches(top to bottom in most shortys) compared to a manifold. How is it coming up with this magic H.P?

when u look at the stock manifolds so will see that when the cylinders are fireing exhaust gases are still in the manifold. when u put 4 cylinders in one line u are going to get back pressure that is not what u want in the manifold hence why exhaust manifolds Leak. now the 8-10HP i was talking about is what you get from the whole line.
