thermostat replace, do I need to drain all coolant?

UR trying to get that build up off the entry of the tubes in the radiator and heater core. Here is where the reverse flush may help. Usually a radiator shop will pull the radiator and soak it to clean it out. If you have a neighborhood shop you can pull your own radiator and take it over. Many times the aluminum radiator needs to be replaced if you have over heating tendencies ! This is timed with a water pump and thermostat change out sometimes.

Drain the system...remove the T-stat...replace the housing...pour in flush and fill with water... run motor up to operating temp with heat selected in cab... 20 min or so...drain system...fill with water...run again ...drain system...install new T-stat and fill with motorcraft gold and distilled water.
I need to find a local place that sells it and that motorcraft rad cleaner. Don't know why locally I can't find Motorcraft stuff. Hey, I'm in SoCal, it's all about the CHEVIES here.

Dealerships sell it over the parts counter about $20 a gallon ...you need to cut it 50/50 with distilled water. you will need 2 gallons. I used prestone flush.

We are blessed here in Oregon we have a parts store called Knechts and they stock a bunch of motorcraft and standard motor products stuff. Their prices are often cheaper than rockauto, which boggles the mind really.
Whenever I pull into that place I usually see 3-4 OBS Ford's in the lot.

Best idea is to remove the reservoir and take it to a sink, let it soak real good, scrub away everything you can in there (really long screwdriver and a rag sorta works) and a smaller screwdriver in the hole the hose goes on to clean it up good.
Main thing is fluid has to go in and out of there easily - no restrictions.
