Update guys, got the engine installed! Put on a brand new melling oil pump and pickup tube, installed the timing cover, and installed the oil pan with a fel pro one piece rubber gasket.

The valve covers are now installed but that's as far as I've gotten today. The installation went fairly easy and tomorrow I'll continue putting it together.

Edit: the green looking stuff you see in the lifter valley and on the rocker arms is the oil they doused it in for shipping

The only thing you are gaining going roller cam is just ease of roller cam but their is no performance gains.

What plans do you have and mods have you done to the truck? I see a dual exhaust on it so kinda curious.

I really like the color scheme on the truck it is one of my favorites on these year trucks.
Trav
Roller cams don't wear out near as fast as flat tappet cams. Less friction on them. You can also run more lift on a roller cam and not wear it out near as fast because you don't have the lobe of the cam digging into a flat lifter. Instead it runs on the roller on the bottom of the lifter and wont wear a groove as fast. wearing cam lobes on high performance engines with big lift was a problem on flat tappet engines.

Pretty cool that you are doing this, have you ever watch someone install an engine or installed another one your self. And I would've personally painted the engine bay with the engine out.

Lol he's 18 so he's still learning. Roller cams are an upgrade across the board. Even if the specs were the same, a roller is still an upgrade and would give better performance; if for lack of friction if for nothing else vs a flat tappet.

Yup, less energy spent wearing out parts, and more going to the wheels.

Thanks man. This is my first time installing an engine. I wanted to paint the engine bay but today and tomorrow is my only two days in a row off and the weather is about to get cold. But, I do eventually plan on painting it, as well as the undercarriage.

Im also ordering some Accel 19 lb. fuel injectors and a new harmonic balancer. My old one had a pretty bad groove worn in it.

Sub'd for the build. Nice to see the love and attention anybody gives these old trucks. Did you tape off the intake since you said all you got done were the valve covers?
