Synthetic Oil Vs. Conventional Oil...Your thoughts?
Hey guys, my truck is a '91. I'm very fortunate in that since it was originally my granddads truck then my fathers and now mine, I know it's history. This truck has had 18 years of conventional motor oil changes. I've been reading a lot lately of some of the benefits of switching to fully synthetic motor oil. I was wondering, after so long with nothing but conventional motor oil, would I see any adverse affects of switching to full synthetic or would it be no prob? Has anyone done this with good/bad results? Opinions would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

No doubt that synthetic is a better lubricating oil. Haven't heard of any significant issues with changing over.
However, I follow the old school thinking that regular changes are just as important. Have stuck with conventional oil, changing every 3,000 miles - mainly for the $$ economy. So far, so good.
In short - I'm a dino person, but still willing to listen to others' experiences.

higher mileage motors I like to use conventional, unless the engine mint or else the synthetic will find every leak, and with worn rings the oil will burn a little more due to synthetic gets real thin when it gets hot, unless you use a heavier synthetic, I used redline once in my trans and it leaked through every gasket, went back to mercon, and I usually change the oil at around 6,000 miles and the oil is still pretty clean, if you are serious about synthetic, use Amzoil, they claim 12,000+ on oil changes, they even give test strips to send back to them to test the oil

im assuming the truck was ran with conventional oil its who life? keep it that way, dont change it, u might actaully hurt it, clearances are different, the oil make up is different, stay with conventional

synthetic oil shrinks the seals in your motor... it will leak from everywhere. on old trucks use conventional. my buddy put synthetic in his 93 probe and it leaked everywhere

Synthetic oil is a great oil to use if the engine is new. Just like others said when the engine is older things start to wear down even if it was driven very gently. Then oil starts to leak out from everywhere. In my opinion it would be better to stick with conventional. If you have the money to spend and keep spending then go ahead and do it but be ready to add oil more often.
