Default Symptoms of fuel regulator failure

Can anyone give me the symptoms to look for of the failure of the fuel pressure regulator? I'm told that as old as my truck is (95 w/4.9 I6 & 5 spd manual, 230K) it isn't unusual to see the spring wear a hole in the diaphragm. I'm wondering if that would cause these unexplained shutdowns while driving down the road.

Remove the vacuum line from the regulator with the engine running and cap the line with your finger so there is no vacuum leak. If the idle picks up it's fine. If it doesn't or if it leaks fuel it is not.

I know this post is old but did you ever figure out the issue?

He hasn't logged on since 2015, don't hold your breath for a response.
