Stripped out timing gears on 1987 Inline 6 Cylinder
I was driving down the rode, when without so much as a hiccup.... I coasted to a stop. Turns out the composite gear in the timing stripped off about 8 of its teeth. Replaced the gears, the water pump while I was there, and she fired right back up.
Pretty tough old bird.....

Yeah, the 4.9L is a tough engine.
Your timing gears are the very first I have ever heard of stripping out like that
and I have owned several 300ci from the 70's.
Ten years & 65,000 miles ago when my 87 4.9L was rebuilt and balanced;
both timing gears were replaced with metal racing gears.
The engine has a whine when idling,
sounds like a Super Charger or transmission going bad, but its neither.
The metal gears are supposed to last longer than the composite gear.

I too have owned several Fords with the 300 inline 6 cylinder... I have never had this problem before. I did some research and find out that Ford switched from metal on metal gears to metal on composite. (In 1987 no less).... This gear made it 23 years but only 111,000 miles... but that really isn't too good.... in my book anyway....
