Like everyone has said, both engines will do the job and have similar MPG. The 300 will run forever if it is still in good shape. The 302 is easier to modify if your looking to add performance. I have a stock 300 with 304k miles on it. The only thing I wish I had is posi-track or limited slip instead of "one wheel drive". But in all those miles, rarely have I ever gotten stuck. Granted, I live in NC and don't go off road much. But in our last snow storm, the truck never stopped. I would check the engine condition and the rear specs to make my decision.

My truck "gets up and goes", like an old dog.

To give you an idea in power, this is the 300 single cab long box auto. I have 31' tires and the 3.08 gears. If you keep stock tires it will be faster for sure. Take it how you wish. Oops ignore that picture, I didn't know you couldn't upload videos. Give me a couple minutes I'll do it through YouTube.

0-20 wasn't bad, after that it fell off the face of the earth lol. dont get me wrong, the I6 seems like a good engine (iv seen a stack of them with blown head gaskets though) i just cant stand them in a daily driver, it sucks for pulling out in traffic or going to pass slower vehicles. plus like others have said, i can get my hands on 302 parts much easier, and i can even find 302 engines 10x easier than I6s, and i buy/sell parts for these trucks for a living...

other than that the fuel mileage is pretty much the same, reliability in my eyes is the same (iv not seen anything that sets the I6 apart from any other engine in my experience) they both will get the job done, just drive 1 of each and make your own conclusion. iv made mine up as you can tell lol.

Thanks a lot guys, but since I made this thread, I actually found a good deal on a slightly newer f150. I really like the old body style, but I think I'm gonna settle for a 03 with a 5.4. How does this compare to the others?

The 300 is a totally different motor with synthetic fluids and efans. Easily another 20hp with good maintenance. I have no problem passing in third or fourth gear with my 2.73 open diff. I have to settle for 90ish top speed, but I like my 21mpg at 55-60mph. My 302 e4od never had the guts my 300 does. It would pull out a little better, but the auto and 3.55's just had no passing power. Sitting at 196k miles right now with zero signs of failure and no major problems. The head gasket issue comes into play because the 300 will run when overheated without a drop of oil in it. Lol. Not good on heads. Did I say good maintenance?
