Default stereo system 1991 f150 custom

I want a louder stereo system in my truck. with it turned all the way up I cant hear my music when the windows are down. I can only start to hear the music when just sitting in the driveway when the volume is up half way. Does this mean my speakers are blown and what can I do to make it louder without installing some crazy system. thanks

If you are trying to keep it cheap, replace the speakers first and see how that works. If you put in a new stereo with old speakers, your bound to have louder, crappy sound. If just the new speakers do not get it loud enough, then I would change the stereo. I bought a $59 one from Auto Zone, and it does fine for just something to listen to as I drive, not the best quality though.

Is it completely stock or do you have anything aftermarket?

What I did:
Replaced the speakers and added an amp. I got 2 http://www.ebay.com/itm/360920674241?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for the door and two http://www.ebay.com/itm/220951377937?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for the rear. Total of under $65 shipped. I hooked up both the front and back leads out of my head unit to the door speaker wires in the dash (LF and LR to LF, RF and RR to RF) this let the HU push the door speakers properly. I then ran an amp out of the rear hookups on the HU (mine had rear and sub) and connected the rear speakers to the amp using the wires in the dash. The sound is amazing, clear, yet not obnoxious. I still have the option of adding subs if I want later but for me this is great. With windows down @65mph I can hear the radio perfectly.

Edit
When getting aftermarket speakers spring for the factory connectors, they are like $5-10 for a pair and let you just use you factory wiring. Total cost (since I had the amp and some wire already) was about $100, I bought 2 pair factory style connectors and an amp power kit to hook my amp up.

The factory speakers are usually louder than aftermarket if you don't have an amp. Mine doesn't rattle the windows, not much bass from those speakers.

If you want to know what size you have without taking anything apart go to crutchfield.com and input your trucks info. they will give you the size of speakers that will fit.

Your door speakers should be 6.5", if you have rear speakers tucked in the back corners of the cab those are 6x8's but most 5x7's will fit also.

onlinecarstereo.com has some of the best prices, a fit guide, and just about every brand you could want.
Like others said, replace the speakers first. Rule of thumb, if you havent heard of the brand, its likely crap. For cheap speakers, i like Clarion. Kenwood and Pioneer cheapies are OK at best IMO.
When buying speakers, you need to pay attention to the RMS rating, or continuous power. If you plan on powering them with the stereo only, get a low RMS rating. Underpowered speakers sound terrible and shorten their life.
