A lot of this makes sense. The OEM electrical system was adequate to the task but everything degrades over time.
There's a hefty amp draw while the starter is cranking.
If a degraded system can't handle that kind of amp draw anymore then it will create resistive heat and fry the weakest point in the system.
Could be something in the starter, the solonoid, the wiring connections, or even the alternator.
