New Fuel Tank
I bought a replacement front gas tank for my 89 single tank, 302, truck. I also got new straps and was struggling to get them on. They seemed too short. I looked at my old tank when I noticed where the straps are the tanks seems are bent. The new tank they are not. Has any one else ever had this problem? Are there different straps for after market vs stock tank? I have included some pix of the old tank showing what I mean. Thanks Jim

I am not sure of the brand. I got it delivered from advance auto because no one local had it shipped. The pic from their site shows the bends. TANK I have been having problems with the fuel system. I dropped the tank to change the pump and because of rust I couldn't get the pump out and the old tank and straps were extremely rusty. I think this truck sat a long time. Figure there was crap in the tank and for the price just change everything. Thanks for the help. Jim

The tank said Dorman. I went to Advanced and checked the one they had in stock. It was wrong too. I am going to try to get the old pump out of the old tank and clean up the tank to use it. It isn't leaking and I feel as though I am going to run around with the tanks. Worse case I'm going to take it to my garage guy and have him get it out and install the new one. Jim

I highly recommend WASHING the old tank before opening it. Take it to a coin-op car wash, and blast as much rust off as you can. Dispose of any remaining gas properly, and then clean the inside. I'm driving on this tank with a new pump, and no problems now:

Your tank looks like it is on its last legs, pressure washing it likely will create leaks with the heavy rust on it... Back in 1997, I installed a Spectra tank for the front- side mounted 19 gal.tank on my 87 which I believe is the same as your 89.. I had no problems with the fit using the original straps. To this day, that tank has no rust on it. If the style and form with the new tanks has changed and you cannot get your original straps to fit, use a universal strap kit and you can then cut the straps to fit. All they have to do is securely hold the tank up and universal straps will do that just fine.
When you do hang the tank back up, smear grease on the tank where the straps go and on the straps themselves.

I contacted a place to ask about their tank. Tomorrow I am going to power wash it and see what is looks like. If it is NG and I can't find the right one I will either get the universal straps or make a set. Thanks Jim

I am going to check the O'rielly's tank tomorrow as their site looks like the correct one. I have a question about the straps. It seems there are 2 part numbers, ST03 and ST05. I have the ST03. I can not see any info on which ones and they are different. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Jim
