Ok guys, I know this topic has been brought up already. I've read all the posts and I am bringing it up again because I want to make sure I do the right thing when I get started on this little project. Instead of removing the smog pump and replacing it with a dummy pulley, I plan to get a shorter belt and bypass the pump all together. Question is, anyone done this? Have any problems? What about removing the hose that comes off the pump? Will that have the same effect? Oh, I have an '88 F150 with a 5.0 302. Just want some feedback. Also, does anyone know what size belt to get if I do the bypass method? I was told that removing the pump would give a hp increase and may help with my horrible mileage. Thanks in advance for all the input I'm gonna receive.

I've tried up to an 86 belt. still too short. gonna try the next two sizes up. we'll see what happens.

Wrong on the mpg and power, a properly working air system doesnt hurt anything, to actually get more power and mileage all the emission crap has to come off, which wont work on efi systems because it utilizes the emissions crap, the only real power\mileage boost is long headers and duals. If you want to measure the belt length, get a seamstress tape measure, wrap it around the way the belt goes less air pump, and take a 1\4" off for tension.

I think my emissions gear is in need of replacing. Clogged and old. Previous owner didn't take care of my sweet old truck at all. So, you're saying don't bypass the smog pump?

the reason I personally would remove the smog pump is bc of a reliability factor. Ive been left on the side of the road by one. They set up and burn your belt up leaving you stranded on the side of the road. As far as mpg or horsepower goes I dont think it matters wether all that stuff is there or not. The egr system will mess with a motor more than anything in my experience. I usually remove a cat, the evap canister and reroute the tank vent into my cowl to keep water out, and remove the smog pump. 96 and newer vehicles you cant pull any of that stuff off unless you figure out how to make the computer happy. The problem with using a smaller belt on the air pump removal is the belt they make for it is just a tad to big. I stole this part number from a different thread (dayco polycog 5060945) they said it was a 45" belt, when it stretches the tensioner cant keep the propper pressure on it and it will squeal and chirp. Thats been my experience with them anyways. You can try it and if it works for you than good you're all set, If not then get the bypass pulley setup.

I think the bypass pulley setup is gonna be my safest bet. Anyone know where I can pick one up for a good price? I've seen em for $70 and up.

Just an FYI for those looking to bypass the smog pump. You'll need an 87.5" belt. Make sure you route it the right way or you'll pull your hair out trying different belts.

Ok so I replaced my alternate r an my 3 v belts. When I started up my truck the pump startes making a loud ticking noise,I was told the bearing are probably shot. My question is can I just take off the v belt that runs the pump or will cause damage to the motor? By the way the trucks an 86 f150 302 efi Any help would be greatly :appreciated
