Default Smelling antifreeze

Ok Guys I took the truck on a little ride today about 70 mi round trip. Well I stop in traffic and the temp hand starts to climb really slowly but never gets above MA on NORMAL and as soon as I get going good again it drops back down to OR RM. Also while I was sitting there I noticed I could smell anitfreeze but no smoke or anything. I am going to replace the cheap and easy stuff first like thermostat and hoses. Before messing around with the waterpump, or the radiator. Any suggestions?

Might be a bad radiator cap, releasing pressure and for getting hot sitting still check the clutch fan. If there is little or no resistance it is bad.

If you smell antifreeze, it's definitely leaking out. Hoses and radiator cap are likely culprits. In old vehicles like our 9th gen trucks, the water hoses can develop tiny holes that leak antifreeze under pressure... You gotta get those suckers replaced before they give completely. BTW, check those heater hoses and the heater core too (hate to bring up that possibility).

I agree with ^

Check the passenger side floorboard to see if it is wet inside,
if it is, replace the Heater Core.

If the inside windows fog up while driving,
that's another indication of a leak in the heater core.

Check the Bi-pass hose...it goes from the pump to the block.

OK well it isn't the heater core checked that out today. I am going tomorrow when I get off and getting new hoses, radiator cap and ordering a water pump. I figured the truck is 14 years old. The old man I bought it from probably hasn't changed any of it in a while. So I will just go ahead. However if it turns out to be worse than those I already called a buddy that bought a couple of 351w to build for his mustang and I am just going to go snag one from him and rip the 4.9 out and throw the 351w in. I just gotta do some research as to what will fit and what won't.
