Okay guys, I'm having trouble with the hydraulic line. 1990 f150 4.9L/M5OD trans. replaced the line and there's a little metal ring with teeth that looks like it holds the line in. it broke. so i tried to use it again and now the line is stuck in there. still trying to get this out. is the ring an essential part of all of it? also, i see no fluid coming out of anything but the master cylinder is full. I replaced the slave and I can't bleed it. The Chilton book says to open the vavle and gravity will bleed it but i see nothing coming out of anywhere. help?

You need the ring to keep the line locked in. It does have a split in it but it's still one piece. The white nylon ring just unhooks the line from the slave by pressing it towards the slave. The clutch doesn't bleed like brakes. You can pump the pedal to build pressure and crack the bleeder, but to get all the air out you just need to pump the pedal a lot.

A piece broke off of the ring, bassically it's now missing two of the little "teeth".

As for bleeding it, do you pump the pedal with the valve open?

No, keep the valve closed and keep the cap off the reservoir.

does it take alot of pumping? i tried that and got nothing. is the fluid line supposed to have any play? you can move it slightly left and right. but not alot.

If the line isn't inserted all the way you'll get nothing.

You gravity bleed it till no bubbles come out. Then you pump the pedal, hold it in, turn the bleeder screw, close the bleeder screw, rinse and repeat. Took me about 7 or 8 times to get all of the air out.
