Default short lovely short!

I have a short on the 4th possition of my 87 f150

i believe its the instramint lights and the running lights and also the radio when the lights are turned on but if u turn the lights off the radio goes on now is there any possible way to figure this out cause its a direct short any size fuse will blow now i can oviously put a direct conect and when it goes to short it just fries what ever is actualy wrong but id like to do it the easy but more less expensive way

it does not short unless i turn the headlights on now is it possible there is a lose wire cause sometimes it just goes right away and other times it goes down the block

Thanks Tom

Sorry Buddy, its trouble shooting. Need to trace the circuit with an ohm meter and isolate the short. Get a wiring diagram and go from there, at least you know how is was made. Any aftermarket stuff added in? Always the first thing to look at, somebody's wiring mess up causing you grief.

yeah well at least i got someone to say the ohm meter lol but nothing after market except the radio which i took out to see if that was it nothing. all it is is the running lights the warning buzzer? ? ? any way that could cause a short and where is that located ? that might be the problem and instrament lights and i got a question can you turn your radio on with out the key in your ignition by pulling the lights on cause i can and dont know if thats saposed to happen thanks

Radio goes on with key off when you turn on the headlights? Thats not right, headlights will go on yes, but radio no. Somebody has this thing messed up. Get a chiltons or haynes manual for a diagram. Don't think anything is offered here on the web for your vintage.

You say it has an aftermarket radio, if so it could be wired incorrectly. I have seen enough of the adapters supposedly for these years of Fords that are not wired correctly. The only thing the one had correct was the plug shape and size, the always hot wire was wired into what was supposedly the ground on the radio, the keyed wire went to an empty terminal and so on.
