Default Shift Kit?

Can someone teach me about shift kits? I have heard of them but not sure exactly what they do. Where is one installed? How much are they and where can you get one? Has anyone installed one and did it benefit your truck in any way? Thanks. I have a '90 aod

A shift kit make the transmission shift firmer. When the transmission shifts firmer it helps performance as it doesn't search or have soft shifts. Google what is a shift kit and you will be able to learn everything you ever wanted and more on them.
The shift kit is installed into the transmission.
Really the price range depends on how good of one you get. You can get it anywhere really number one place off the top of my head is summit racing.

I personally didn't install it but the PO of my 88 F150 installed a shift kit and it (in my opinion) helped my truck greatly but I have never driven another C6 302 4x4 truck and I am comparing it to C6 302 and 351W cars and an 86 AOD and 90 E4OD.

I am not sure if this is correct but I believe I read somewhere that shift kits in an AOD are not worth a damn.

I did some research on aod shift kits and found some people that say they installed one with great results. Anyone have any experience with transgo shift kits?

Couldn't tell you on the transgo as I have the B&M but I have read good things on transgo that is probably what I will be putting in our 80 Mustang.

Yeah I've read good things about them as well. I'm looking at the transgo aod hp.

Will a shift kit raise the shift points? My truck shifted 1-2 @ 4000 rpm and I'd like it to be at about 5000.

I don't believe it will however look up a little about doing that I think you can adjust something on the AODs to make it shift later. (funny you want yours to shift later on our 90 F150 E4OD it drives me nuts how late it shifts).

Yeah I read about adjusting the tv cable to do that. I'd like to try it but I don't know how much adjustment it takes.

That is funny, I know what you mean about late shafts being a bother but I'd like it to rev a little higher under a lot of throttle.

Do a little turn at a time to see what rpm it gets to and make sure the truck doesn't get to high of rpms or throw codes. I know our 86 F150 302 AOD use to shift at about 4500 rpm. Our current 90 F150 302 E4OD shifts at 3500-4000 rpm but you have to remember me and my dad have probably a lot different driving style then you. (My dad lays hard into the throttle but does the speed limit where as I lay slowly into it and let into it when accelerating above 1/2 throttle yet I also do the speed limit)

Never mind just looked it up and it probably isn't a good idea to do what I said I guess I was thinking of the throttle cables like on my Harleys. Ignore me on the post above.

I have read that tv cable adjustment on the aod is very important but I've also read about people tightening it up with good results. I hope to find more info about it because its peaking my interest.
