Default Running really rich

1992 F150 4x4 automatic, having issues with the truck running very rich to the point where it floods itself. have to depress accelerator pedal to start it, then rev engine for a minute and then throw it into gear and hope it doesnt stall out. fellas down at the local shop said it was running rich and tried to check the ECU/ECM but couldnt get any reading on it. The speedometer does not work I believe because something is shorting it out (continually blows a fuse), could this be related? Is it nessecary for the ECU to be functional to control the fuel system, and could a faulty ecu cause this excess fuel?

thanks.

Well, I would believe that excess fuel would be caused by a fuel regulator problem.

How long have you had the truck, what condition are the wires/plugs/rotor/cap in?

I would start w/ finding your short problem, especially that particular one. as that one can muck alot of things up! Your ECU might come back on line. Now your running in default mode at best. What circuits does that fuse cover?

If you can't get codes from the computer that usually means it is bad. Yes, the truck needs the computer to control the fuel.

Check the wires to the temp sensor, not the sender, my old trucks ones corroded at the plug, and ran rich to the point I could not start it until it sat a while until the plugs dried out.

thanks for all the suggestions.

I've had the truck for about 2 months. When I had it towed the shop replaced the rotor/cap, cleaned the throttle body, said I could use new plugs/wires but not crucial, and replaced the coolant temp sensor. The radiator was leaking so I replaced that recently. I'll try investigating the blown fuse further, anyone have info on what that fuse also covers or where to start?

thanks
