Recommendation shutting up syncros and whining tranny

An Update
Thought I would update.
I drained the fluid and added Lucas Transmission Fix, and 3.5 or so Quarts of Mercon V.
I only drove it around the block, but it still whines, and feels clunky while shifting. My 3rd gear syncro did seem a little quieter.
We will just have to see how long she goes. I am not putting any more money into messing around with the tranny.

I'd wonder if you have the correct fluid in it. If I read your post correctly, you and I sound like we have the same truck and transmission. Years ago I had to replace the concentric slave cylinder...dropped the transmission...lost the fluid but did the replacement and refilled with the usual 80W gear oil. Subsequently, I had the whining...a while later the transmission went out due to the wrong oil being replaced, It should have been the automatic (Dextron I think) fluid...so...$1200 later the lesson was learned. I hope for your sake you didn't make the same mistake I made.

I replaced with Mercon v ATF fluid and still have the whine. Doesn't slip and no grinding into gear. Just whines and seems like it has to push metal around when you shift into gear.

Like const. ford said, the gear transmissions are relatively easy to work on if you have any mechanical ability. Just get a cheapo digital camera to take pictures if you're unsure going into it. There's a few youtube videos on the replacement of the input/output shafts. It's basicall what you need to watch anyways as they tend to go in depth with do's and don'ts. Good luck.
