Recommendation shutting up syncros and whining tranny
4.9, 5 speed. My mechanic said the tranny was overfilled, so he drained some out. But now I notice it whinning and my 3rd gear syncro sounds worse than it did before.
What recommendations do you have to quiet things down and prolong the inevitable?

I would recheck the fluid level, and make sure it has the proper lube....
all that being said, in the olden days (circa 1973) I was driving a 4 spd RoadRunner and got really tired of changing broken shift forks, in the snow, at the curb, at night. I did get good at it, though.
After the third or fourth in a month, I talked with Malcolm Durhams' speed shop (ex old time pro stock racer) and he suggested for the winter months to use mineral oil, as opposed to the 80-90 weight gear oil mopar suggested. It was lighter and did not present an almost solid glop when cold (which is what was causing my forks to break) but it is a great lubricant and everything was fine. Nothing was noisier than an old mopar hemi 4 spd or a Muncie M-22 rock crusher, but the mineral oil did dampen them both.

If you bought this truck from someone and they overfilled it then overfilling it was the band aid for the issue. There's really no additive to put in there that will help anything.
