Rear wheel well smoke- Bearings?
1993 5.0 f150 e4od
Hey guys. I noticed that when my wife drove the truck and returned home, the passenger rear wheel well had a smell and some light smoke. I looked at the plate on the inside of the wheel hub and its covered in oil. Probably differential oil which would mean new bearings right?
Can anyone give me some guidance here? I have a manual, but what am I looking at for this job? The rear end is the basic gears 8.xx something I believe. I don't think its limited slip.....

+1Axle seal could be caused by bad bearing, pluged vent or just old age. If you have a rear end with a drop out 3rd member the axle and bearing are held in by 4 bolts behind the axle flange and the bearing is pressed on to the axle the seal is pressed in or driven into the axle housing and is easaly changed. if you have C clip type axles and bad beaing you may have to replace the axle. in either case you will need to replace the brakes if they are oil soaked. If you plan on doing it yoursef invest in a good repair manual its not a hard job but time consuming and it can get messey and the longer you put it of the worse it will get.
