the old flange slid off super easy, and had slight groves, so I replaced it with a brand new one last week. after more inspection and a couple neighbors' input, I think it will need a professional look. with everything installed with the 17 turns matching marks, I can turn the drive shaft and the flange moves outward about an 1/8th-3/16 inch and that's what where it leaks. (if that all makes sense.)

is there any non-8.8 rear ends that would be an easy swap?

Sounds like the pinion bearing. Just get another 8.8 from the junkyard. You need to keep a rear end with the sensor on the differential for the speedometer and for the automatic transmission to shift properly.
