A Real Big No No!
when i lock my hubs in, i hear a loud clang, clang, clang, clang, and so forth... i figured it was a u-joint going out in one of the front axles? but then i remembered that i backed up out of the steep part of my yard in 4-low (just playing around so i wouldn't spin the precious grass up), and when i pushed my clutch in i heard a KA-BOOMM (sounded like a gun going off)!!! i was like wtf, broken axle?? i jumped out of the truck and looked and everything seemed to be in one piece, suprisingly.... and then noticed that my park brake was set (i forgot about it).... morale of the story, never back up in reverse with your truck in 4-low with the park brake set.... you have to replace the transfer case after that found out thats what was clanging now my question, i have a 93 f150 as a parts truck, same motor/tranny.... BUT, it has a different gear ratio.... will the transfer case out of my 93 parts truck with the different gear ratio, work in my 96???

Yes, the gears in the axles do not matter to the transfer case. You should replace the chain and sprockets before you install it under your truck. Also check the pump mounts and tab to make sure your pump does not start to spin and trashes your transfer again.

A parking brake being set will not harm a good t-case. Your t-case was about to go anyway. Just be glad you found out it was going out in your driveway instead of somewhere you really needed it.

well "I" didnt find out the transfer case was bad, my local garage told me (they've always been honest with me about everything pretty much), but people misjudge things sometimes (and im hoping the mechanic was wrong about the t-case).... i still swear that it sounds like a U-joint in the front axle that has slack in it.... it doesn't clang, pop, make noise, or anything UNTILL i lock the hubs in.... i checked the 4x4 driveshaft u-joints, and the axle u-joints (they were good).... the only u-joint that i saw that needed to be replaced, was the passenger side axle u-joint (closest to the spindle)... and it was just rusty around the end of the caps.... i may be in over my head on this one

You could have broken a front axle shaft or possibly something in the front diff went out or is loose. Only an inspection will tell. Again tho what ever went out in your drive line isn't a direct result of the parking brake on..

right when it popped like it did, thats what my intentions were; a broken axle.... i jumped out immediately and started cussing lol i checked my axle shafts and they all seemed to be good... and then i started cussing more because i didnt know what i had broke.... i wonder how i can tell if the transfer case is bad? i've been working on vehicles since i was 10 years old, and ive never had any problems with a transfer case... any help would be appreciated

You could remove the front drive shaft and put the TC in 4 wheel and see if you get the sound. Then take the TC out of 4 wheel and lock the hubs and listen. If you get the sound with the hubs locked try unlocking one then lock it and unlock the other one and see if you can isolate the sounds that way. Since (I believe) the TC is a split case design with no inspection pan it would be harder to check the internals. You can also check that the pinion and ring gear are moving freely and no excessive play.

well i got bored today and started messing around with my truck.... i locked the hubs in and pulled out (without shifting into 4 wheel drive).... from 0-3mph it clangs.... and after 3-4 mph the sound kinda goes away.... i actually engaged the 4 wheel drive and it clanged untill around 4 mph.... i stopped and started to back up and it felt like the freakin park brake was set, so i have no idea about that one.... after that, i said screw it and disengaged the 4 wheel drive and unlocked the hubs.... i backed up and went down the road, and pulled over in a parking lot and locked the hubs in.... after i locked the hubs in, i got underneath the truck and twisted the front driveshaft and twisted the rear driveshaft..... the front driveshaft has more slack in it than the rear does.... so now im thinking the ring and pinion gear in the front end is shot.... any other ideas???
