Default New to forum...First F150: 1995 5.0 longbed. Few questions

First off...I'm a new poster to the forum so hello and thanks for reading.

I am about to purchase a '95 V8 5.0 longbed F150 as my beater truck / jetski hauler. It has 13x,xxx miles on it and runs great. Great shape with new tires, brakes, battery, etc. and they're asking $1,800. Assuming the ford dealer doesn't find anything wrong it's a done deal.

A few questions though...

How easy is it to drop in a new 302 5.0 crate engine? I've been googling crate engines and have found a plethora of 302 5.0's...which one would I be looking for? How much would an installation run?

Anyone know a good mechanic in San Diego??

Thanks, I'm looking forward to utilizing the wealth of knowledge here. cheers

john

i'm assuming that your going for a carbed motor? cause putting it in yourself would be pretty easy. but if your going for efi your going to have someone reprogram your computer which can be pricey. but if you have the money for a crate motor sounds like it might not be an issue.

You say it runs great. Why put a new motor in it? I've seen a lot of 302s go over 200,000 miles. Don't fear the mileage. My 95 F150 has 140,000 and I drive it everyday.

I'm not planning on dropping it in until the old motor dies out.

I want to know exactly which one to look for in case a deal comes along over the next year or two...I'm sure some POS car with a new-ish crate engine will come along on craigslist and I want to be able to jump on it.

I just bought the Haynes manual, could anyone here recommend another one?

I've never worked on cars, but I can rebuild a 2-stroke in less than 3 beers.

You are the man! Might check out the Ford dealer for their drop in engines. Just to save a bunch of alterations that cost both time, money and more beers. War story, 1978 Bronco, did an engine install, no problem, started to install hood, 12 beers later buddy and I finally finished. Engine still running strong, hood is still crooked.
