quick EGR question
Sort of folloing up on an earlier post...I'm replacing the EGR because its bad, but I'm also stuck with the problem of a bad exhaust leak where the EGR pipe goes into the prot on the manifold. I'd leave it but I'm tired of breathing in exhaust and hearing that ticking sound. The pipe looks good and really isnt too rusty, so I'm hoping that a bad donut gasket is the culprit. Trouble is, I've been trying to get that bottom nut off for over a week, and cant get it to budge. I've tried heat, tapping it, penetrating oil every day. Call me weak, but I can't get it. Im thinking of cutting the darn thing (nut) with a dremel, getting a new nut, and redoing the flange on the pipe at this point.
Before I waste too much more time trying to save this pipe, can somebody tell me if there IS a donut gasket in there to replace? Thanks.

He (or the next owner) might need to smog it to drive it. New Jersey is a tax poor state. I doubt they would not take advantage of the Smog Certification racket. Extortion at it's legal best! They wouldn't get past the visual inspection! I've never had a problem w/that end of the EGR pipe. Where's "Just call me sean"? Paging "dr bowtie"! If they,or another good Samaritan doesn't cough up the info by sun up, I'll crawl under and find out what kind of mechanical Synceration (don't bother lookin it up, it ain't there) is being utilized. It's just an EGR system. It's pretty low on the "Rocket Science Totum Pole".

i'll have to look at my truck to see if there is gaskets or not on the exhaust manifold where the pipes hook on...not sure..
easiest way to find the leak is to jack the truck up on stands at all 4 wheels and start the truck and crawl under the truck and find it...I use my hand...getting as close to the pipe without touching it...you will feel the air comming out..
could be the pipe flange or manifold where it fastens to the block...as for the EGR leave it hooked up...the EGR will lower combustion temps enough that pinging doesnt become an issue and you want as much timing as you can get away with on these engines....

The pipe is flared only on the nut end. You won't have enough pipe to cut and reflare the pipe. Cutting down the theadline w/ a dremmel won't damage the flare anyway! The opposite end would determine weather you would be able to cut the nut off and slide a new one on. A new nut is going to have to slide up behind the flare. to catch you up dr bowtie, he broke the bottom of the valve off in the nut! Kind of impressive, although a crack in the casting probably helped. Think there was a hammer involved?

Yes, the exhaust leak is most definately coming out from around the nut itself at the bottom of the EGR pipe, telling me either the flange itself rusted away or there is a bad donut gasket in there. I can wiggle the pipe around in that fitting a bit. The EGR was bad anyway...sending codes and being rusted through in one spot.
And yes, the EGR valve snapped pretty easily. I was actually pushing with one hand and holding a flashlight in the other.

As I mentioned before, the EGR end of the pipe is flared. The other end (According to a local mechanic) uses a doughnut & retainer flange that allows a small amount of play when working w/the business end. You might find the EGR nut to be purpose specific (Not found at the hardware store).
