I'm sure any of those headers will bolt right on. The problem most of the time is getting CARB certification for the newer models, especially for '96.

There is.....or was a website devoted entirely to getting v8 power out of the inline 6. I think it was called something like " 6 to 8 " , I found it years ago but I cant find it now. Had good information about headers , performance parts, etc.

Well then I stand corrected, lol. No offense was intended, just relaying what I'd been told. Rear exiting does sound like a good idea, hadn't thought of that as an option. As for now, mine sounds like the ape you mentioned BEING raped with the the exhaust leaks yet to be remedied. Again, my apologies and I may have to try that rear exiting route when/if I ever get to re-work the blow hole
None taken, don't worry Just irks me when people say that straight piping a 4.9 is gonna be ricey. I don't have details on my setup, was on the truck when I bought it, but it doesn't sound bad at all. Not a V8 of course, but it's distinctive. I'm trying to get a video right now that captures the real sound of my truck, the crap camera I have only catches the tractor sound and none of the undertones in the exhaust

I'd think (not my strongest point) the difference would come in from removing the bend used to make it side exit. We did smething similar on a friend's 69 F100 w/ a 351M, just backwards. We spent close to a year working on this truck after we pulled it outta the briar patch at his grandfather's house (with a tractor) So needless to say, it was built as close to "right" as a bunch of 15-16 year old kids could accomplish. But, it was stupid loud, so he added a bend to bring it out just before the rears (actually trying to get it louder) that actually toned it way down.
I'm wondering what it'd sound like if you left em straight, just shorter where it'd exit under the truck? Hmm....

My muffler exploded, so I cut it off. Just hollow cats and that's all right after. It was loud, but did not sound like a ricer. Stuck a Cherry Bomb on it. It was loud, but did not sound like a ricer. I put a stock replacement muffler on it now. Boy was the noise getting annoying.

I accidentally dropped off the bottom of a loading ramp in Mazda once, taking a friend in labor to the hospital. Ripped the muffler and back outta the cat, so I could definitely see how annoying that can be. Exhaust sounds are a hard topic to hit home with a lot of times, some like loud, some like quiet and some think it's their duty to set off car alarms by starting their truck, lol.
I personally (just my opinion) would be happy with a functioning cat, cherry bomb and NO MORE EFFIN exhaust leaks!!! But, to each his own. Once upon a time I had a Prelude Si w/ a gutted cat and drilled holes in the muffler. Now I wanna shoot every car/truck I hear that sounds like that did

I have some experience with this beast. I put a header on my 6. Holy hell it was a lot of work gave it some more torque and deeper tone. My exhaust it 2.5 with x pipe dumped over the rear end with 40series Flowmaster.
