Question About the 300 I-6
Hi everyone...just curious about the mods that can be made to net an increase in both speed and fuel mileage for the Great White Buffalo...1993
I-6 300 with fuel injection. Right now I do need a new fuel pump in the front tank so I'm thinking that once I get started with that, I might as well explore other options as well. Also...if this goes on another thread by all means move it but does anyone know of a rigid tonneau cover for the 8' bed that hinges up? Thanks. Rich.

There is a 6 cylinder tuneup that many do. Involves changing the coil, cap/rotor, plugs and wires, and a timing bump. Replace mechanical fan with electric fan. Replace all vacuum lines. Replace all fluids front to rear with synthetics. K&N RF-1012 mod. Check them out.

The swap to electrical fans is by far the biggest bang for the buck. Can be done for as low as $50 using used e fans and new factory dual fans can be had for as little as $100. Proven dyno results of 20-40hp regained that is lost to the mechanical fan. As said above, the K&N RF1012 is a fairly cheap step up to decrease intake restriction and improve throttle response. Good reads below. Don't let anyone tell you that electric fans won't work on trucks. Electric fans are standard equipment on nearly every new truck on the market for a reason. Also, the 300 engine bay is so easy to clean up and increase airflow and maintenance. Love my baby!

I've got the I6 with 5 sp and here's how my mileage has gone in the year that I've had the truck:
Complete Stock: ave 14.0 mpg
Added K&N Filter: ave 15.4 mpg
Added Accel SuperCoil: ave 16.3 mpg
Added Dual Electric Fans: ave 18.1 mpg
I'm not running any synthetics, but I have Lucas additive put it the oil at every change. I also did the full "tune-up" when I got it a year ago (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.), and I got new Michelin's this past summer. I haven't seen 20 mpg yet like Unit, but maybe when the weather warms up again in the spring it will improve. The only thing really left to do is upgrading to the 3G alternator.
