My little brother's got a 91 F150 with a straight 6 and a 5 speed. The clutch is gone and he's trying to replace it and we're having a hell of a time pulling the tranny. He's buying a chilton's right now and hopefully that'll help. He got all the bolts connecting the tranny to the block but it doesn't want to slide back. I'm not a mechanic so I won't feel bad if I get any suggestions that are obvious. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sometimes the dowel pins get corroded,make sure all the bolts are out and you can use a pry bar,be very easy prying so you dont crack the trans case,and dont pry on the flywheel,pry between the engine block & the trans case,remember be easy & pry a little on one side then the other.

I actually got it out past all those studs. Theres 2-3 inches between the block and the trans and it just doesn't want to move.

The pilot bearing might have pulled out stuck on the input shaft of the trans and hanging on the clutch splines,but its not very likely. This is a stupid question,but did you remove the shifter from inside the truck?

I wish I could help, but I have never removed a transmission before. I am interested to know how it turns out though, in case I ever need to do this with my truck.

Is all you have it on is blocks ?! For God's sake get yourself a transmission Jack, you can rent them at a tool rental place. They are not expensive if you want to purchase one, see the link below. I don't want to see anyone getting hurt if the transmission topples off of your blocks a lands on one of you. Assuming you have all of the stuff loose I would imagine you have the transmission coming out at an angle and something has hung up, it does not take much of a misalignment to cause them to jam up. You do you have a clutch alignment tool? Just asking

I didn't know trans jacks were that cheap and I've got a harbor freight about 20 minutes away too. No he didn't take the shifter out, idk why that was the first thing I told him to do lol. My buddy suggested it might be the clutch cable still connected and i think he might be right since the pedals on the floor. Hopefully we get this done today cuz it's actually kinda nice out (for ohio) and it's supposed to be in the 30's this weekend.

So the bolts are out. the driveshaft is off, you say its about 2-3" pulled away from the engine itself?
I hope you have the engine supported? it tends to lean back alot and will even drop back enough to brake a motor mount when the tranny does come fully apart. and if you jack up the engine a few hairs you might find the tranny will slide out much easyer. a pry bar works great as a few of the boys have already said. if you have the normal f150 5spd its one of the lighter trannys to man handle. i think you will find its not to hard to slide it out. of the way. i was able to change my clutch without fully dropping the tranny. you shouldnt have to worry about the clutch line if your just moving it back. and your new clutch comes with the line up tool. Altho i bet you wont have the room to use it. it can be done without the tool. just takes two people.
