Default Oil expertise?

Does anybody have any insight on different oil types in these engines? I know most run 10w30, some 5w30 in the winter, etc. does anybody run a straight 30 wt? I recently came across many cases of Redline 30wt full synthetic racing oil, any idea how that would bode with my old 4.9? I also have several cases of Redline 5w30 which according to several of my drag strip buddy's, tends to be a fair amount thinner than traditional 5w30, but still retains the same lubricating qualities. The 5w30 will most likely make it into my Monte Carlo, but what do you guys think about 30 wt for the truck. It idles smoother and seems to just run better all around with a thicker oil, I usually run 15w40 now, 10w30 in the winter. Thoughts?

Racing oils are normally changed every few runs, or after every run or race. Because of this they don't have the additive packs that normal engine oils do. You would not want to run a racing oil for a normal oil change interval.

As far as any other oil goes I feel it all depends on the shape of the engine and what you are doing with it. If it's a high mile daily driver and you change the oil every 3 to 5k then just use a good oil. In my 95 I just put a ramn 302 in it, I change the oil & filter every 3000-3500 miles. I run the regular Yellow bottle dino Pennzoil 5w30. It a great oil that has a very stout add pack in it. It's a daily driver. Now if it was a daily driver that had a somewhat built engine it it that I might race once in a while I might go for a synthetic 5w40 like I use in my Mustang. But in my case there's just no reason to spend the extra money. I also use nothing but Motorcraft filters. They'r probably the best $4 filter you can get in my opinion.

If you feel like reading all kinds of stuff about different oils check out www.bobistheoilguy.com There's tons of info on all kinds of oil in that forum.

I'd run 4 qts of 30w and 2 qts of 5w30. My truck does better with 15w40 also.

If the truck does better with 40wts, why not try a 10w-40 if you're using conventional?
