Default O2 sensor troubles

Hey all, I have a '96 f-150 with a 5.0L 302 auto 4X4 with about 100k on it. I am currently having alot of trouble with the O2 sensors. A while back the check engine light came on so took the truck to one of my buddies to read the codes. According to him It was throwing codes for 2 of O2 sensors and the heaters that go with the O2 sensors. So i promptly replaced the 2 O2 sensors that were throwing the codes and disconnected the battery to reset the engine light. Then started it up and took it for a drive. The check engine light stayed off for a couple miles then came back on after pulling out from a stop sign. I then took it back to my buddy to check and see what codes were coming up and this time the only codes coming up were for the same 2 heaters for the O2 sensors that i had already replaced.

The truck seems to be running fine and im getting the same gas mileage i was getting before having the sensor problems. Im thinking its a short somewhere in the heater circuit but have no idea where to start looking. If anyone has any ideas i could really use the help. thanks

What exactly are the codes. Usually if its bad cats the code will read Insufficent Catalyst bank 1 or 2. Check the fuses and wiring for the O2 sensors. Did you install direct plug in o2s or universal wire in O2s? Let me know.

They were direct plug in o2s. Also i dont have a whole lot of time to work on it right now do you think it will hurt to keep driving it for a couple weeks till i find some time to work on it?

Oh and i also dont remember exactly what the codes were anymore (being it was a week or two ago already) though im pretty sure it didnt say Insufficent Catalyst bank 1 or 2.

Alright, i checked the fuses and the wiring and couldn't find anything wrong(worn wires, bad connections, ext.). Does anyone have any other ideas? I plan on checking the codes again as soon as i can get my hands on a scanner but might be a little while till i can. Also another update im starting to notice an unusual smell from the exhaust. Im assuming this is from a bad fuel mixture but i could be wrong. thanks for the help so far.

I can't tell you exactly what is wrong but I can tell you just because you get codes on your O2 sensors, that doesn't mean the sensors are bad. It could just mean that they are reading a bad mixture of air and such and the info it sends to the computer cannot compensate for it. I had engine codes for bank 1 and bank 2 O2 sensors, but it was caused by a vacuum leak. Unfortunately, vacuum leaks can be murder to find.

Jim.
