Default Not Shifting Into Gear...?

I have a 6 cylinder 1994 Ford F150 XLT 4X4 with a manual transmission. It has been sitting still for a couple years and I decided to finally start working on the thing. There had been something wrong with the battery for a while, so we replaced the battery, and it ran, although the battery seemed to be draining over time. I was able to charge it up the other day and get it running for a while and move it a couple feet, and then it died. So just today, I fixed the battery problem by replacing the alternator, and it seems to run flawlessly. The one problem is that now the truck does not move at all! The shifter moves fine, but it does not go into gear. Also, the shifter for the 4 wheel drive is stuck, and it looks like it's in 2H, but I can't be sure. It would be AWESOME if you geniuses could help me out. =] Thanks!

well if your clutch was toast it wouldn't move no matter what gear you put it in...but since you said it used to move i'm guessing that's not it. does it smell, smoke, anything?

Well, it's clearly not the clutch, as you have to put the clutch in to start it. There is no smell or smoke. I think it is probably the shifter, because you can shift it all over the place and it won't grind or anything, and you don't have to put the clutch in to shift it either. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

One of the truck's tires is in a hole, so when we try to roll it or push it with the fourwheeler, it rolls to a certain point and then rolls back. So I can't tell if the tires are locked or if it is just stuck in the hole.

Thanks

Cliff

EDIT: Also, now the ABS and parking brake lights are on when I start the truck up.

you can shift it in gear with the clutch out and the engine running????? and my concern is that the rear could be locked up but if ur saying shifting problems what you need to do is see if you can shift it with the engine off then see if you lift the rear up push the clutch in and put it in a gear with the engine off have someone turn the drive shaft

When I shift with the clutch out and motor running, it simply goes into place, but does not grind, the truck does not shut off, or show any signs of actually shifting into gear. Yesterday I ran a diagnostic check, both KOER (Key On Engine Running) and KOEO (Key On Engine Off) to the computer with an Auto X-Ray scanner, and everything was in check except an error came up that read, "522 Vehicle Not In Park/Neutral during KOER. Switch Circuit Open." The 4X4 shifter is locked up, but yesterday, while we were trying to pull the truck with the fourwheeler, we were able to move the shifter into 4x4, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Tomorrow, we are going to pull the truck out with another truck rather than a fourwheeler, over to a more flat surface so we can jack it up to further diagnose the problem. Thanks for all your help guys, and if you have more suggestions, PLEASE let me know!

Thanks!

Cliff

seems like either the 4x4 shifter is stuck in neutral or the clutch is gone but most deff is the 4x4 shifter only way to tell is to lift it up and start turning the drive shafts and see what moves and what doesnt

Okay, so we got the 4x4 shifter into 4x4 and we jacked it up and ran it but the drive shaft isn't spinning. But when we turn it by hand, the wheels spin. So it sounds kind of like it's the tranny but if you have any suggestions, they would be very helpful...

Thanks

try difrent gears in the trany seems like something is stuck in neutral or something is grinded not shifting right when u put it in 4x4 and turn the drive shaft do all 4 tires move and when u put it into 4x2 does just the back move and i would try all the gears maybe 1st is grinded unlikly but posible or it could be a really bad clutch when its running can you smell any thing try what ever u can whill keeping it small but i would pull the trans to make sure it ant the clutch
