no oil pressure according to the gauge
so,i was driving downt he street the other day and my engine light comes on.I checked the oil pressure guage and it had dropped to 0. The truck ran fine all the way home.Next i checked oil level which read normal. There is no abnormal sounds coming from the engine, and it runs just fine.I have only started it to see if the guage still reads 0.It still does read 0.I am hoping it is just a faulty reading, but any i deas to check would be extremely helpful.

On the driver side of the engine a little bit back from the oil filter is the oil pressure sending unit. its kinda small and just screws into the block with a special socket that you can get at an auto parts store for about $10. you can:
1) test your oil pressure by hooking up an oil pressure gauge to that port in the block, run your truck, and read the gauge. Just make sure you let your truck cool and all the oil run into the pan before you start unscrewwing things.
2) pull the wire off the sending unit and ground it (gator clip works nicely here). if the gauge is good, then it should read normal or high. if it still reads 0 with the wire grounded then you've got a bad wire or a bad gauge in the cluster.
I think I paid about $14 or $24 when I replaced my sending unit.

ok,i was able to locate pressure switch with the help i recieved and for the hell of it gave it a couple of taps with a screwdriver.after that i started the truck and oil pressure was right back to where it should be.i guess i will be buying a new pressure switch.that is alot better than having to install a new oil pumpor worse.thanks for all the help guys, you saved me alot of time, effort and money.thanks again.

I also have the same problem with my gauge is on 0 and my engine light is on. So I took the old sending unit out and put in a mechanical gauge and it had 55-60 psi oil pressure. So I replaced the sending unit and gauge still reads 0 with engine light on. Need a smog test next month and won't pas with engine light on.

I know the engine has oil pressure I checked with a mechanical gauge and it had 55-60 psi of oil pressure. and replaced the sending unit with a Motorcraft unit. I'm guessing now must be gauge or wiring. Thanks

The CEL has nothing to do with the oil pressure. Don't replace any parts unless they're due on the maintenance schedule, or they fail published tests. Click these & read the captions:
