96 Trans/ Motor issues Please Help!
Hi Im new and I have a 1996 XLT 4x4 Ext Cab F-150 with the 5.8 351. I love the Truck but I am having some isses.
Ok First My over drive "off" light on the shifter is flashing.
Also Just today I replaced the started on it becuse it died, But I got it running again and its running very wierd, It will run fine, then all the sudden, It will just like lose power, sound very wierd, and its like its choking it sleff out, and just very low power, then all the sudden it just kicks up and will run fine, then about 30 seconds later it will do it again, and this is on going, Also if im stoped in Drive, it will go to a low idel (like 500) and start to shake. I just dont get it, Iv ran sytem diognostics, and it has no codes throw altough the engine check light is on and always have since i have owned it. Has anyone experenced this? PLEASE HELP with ideas and for some reason i think its the touque converter.
Do i need to reset the computer somehow after i disconnected the battery?
THANKS -Brett

Welcome to the site!!
If the 'check engine' light is on - there's codes to be had somewhere. You've likely got the e40d tranny - no experience here with that critter.
The weird idle is often a symptom of the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid acting up. Many times, removing it and cleaning with carb cleaner will clear things up.
If the battery was disconnected for 20-30 minutes, the computer was reset. It takes it awhile to relearn everything - so it may run a bit oddly during this time. The more oddly it runs during this time - the more likely that it was heavily compensating for some other issue.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Because the truck is a '96 you should have OBDII. That means you can only pull codes with a scanner. Also the codes can only be erased with a scanner. If the check engine light is on you should have gotten codes, and the overdrive light flashing means you should have gotten transmission codes. The few times I have checked the computer and it wouldn't enter diagnostic the computer was bad. I'm not too sure with yours though because it's OBDII and I'm more familiar with OBDI.
