So after tons of time meticulously cleaning and cleaning sensors and checking wires to make sure they weren't chaffed or broken I finally got the pan off which is after market with no drain plug. It had no filter in it. Why would a person go through the trouble of putting an after market pan on but no filter? What potential damage am I looking at I know I put at least 10k on it since I bout it no telling how much the previous owner put on it. Also someone told me how to drain the torque converter but my silly question is will it refill on it's own as I am adding fluid back to the trans or is there a separate way to fill it. I've always been told not to run something without a filter but in this case does that rule still apply? Could there be a reason he left it out?

So I got the trans filter and fluid change done (including the torque converter) after the parts store gave me the wrong filter 3 times and insisted it was just a design change. I went on a test drive after the truck had been idling for well over an hour with no problems. The test drive started out great everything shifter smooth truck sounded great then out of nowhere the truck completely just lost all power no spitting no sputtering just dead. I through it in neutral and pumped the gas rapidly turning the key and it started back up but then it started losing power more frequently the longer I was driving until eventually it was every couple minutes any ideas guys.

So this is a completely separate issue now?

Check for codes again. Also might wanna check fuel pressure, watch it until it dies and note the pressure.

Your 96 uses what's called a PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module).
You can calibrate it up to 6 times, after which it locks you out. This was done to prevent people from tampering with mileage on the odometer. Search around and you'll find how to recalibrate the PSOM.
