Default 87 F150 Shifter

What's up guys. This is my first post. I recently got an 87 F150 5.0 4spd from my uncle as a gift. He had it sitting for 5 years. It was covered so it is in fairly good condition. The one main problem it has after I got it home and running is the rear main seal leaks pretty bad. I know it is a PITA to get done but I can do it, it will just take some time. I started pulling things apart and am unable to get the shifter off the trans. So my question is does anyone know how to get it off? There seems to be two red push in buttons on either side but I'm still unable to pull it off. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a pic of big red. She may not be pretty now but I'm hoping to get her sorted out.

Is there a metal ring that twists off holding the shifter in?

I didn't see a metal ring. Where would it be? The shifter arm is square where it goes over the piece that comes out of the trans.

It seems like it would just pull off but it sure isn't doing that.

Early models, unscrew the large cap that secures the shifter to the top cover. Later models, remove the two screws securing the gear shifter to the stub shaft. I don't know which applies to your truck.

I'm going to say it is the two screws to the stub shaft but I'm unable to find any screws holding it in place. I'll check again tonight after I get home and see what I can find.

I looked at this last night and there definitely aren't two screws holding the arm on however there aren't 4 bolts to remove it either. The shifter has a part number on it of E7TZ-7210-G.

Photos I can do however it has been a crazy day and it is midnight and I'm finally getting online again. I guess that is a holiday weekend for you. I will get some posted tomorrow.

Thanks,
