I know my '93 has 2 cats. Its a CA truck also. I cant remember exactly where they are both located. I'll have to climb around under it later and I'll get back to you.

This is the stick set up:
Manifolds go into a cat that is a 2 into one, shortly after the cat there is a resonator (looks a lot like a cat). Then somepiping runs back to a huge muffler and out the back. To get the best sound you will need to remove the resonator and muffler.

Should have resonator and cat, cat goes after the resonator, is this still a factory exhaust? And what engine? Go look at a Walker Exhaust parts book it will show you the configuration.

Up until last year, a variance for F-150's allowed single Cat hi-capacity replacement (Magnaflow was the preferred brand) of dual Cats. Such is not the case now.
However, if you already have a single hi-capasity installed, you're good to go (grandfather regulatory clause/ They can't make something illegal that was legal at the time it was installed).
That being said, there aren't too many of you (us) around, so a greenhorn doing the initial visual inspection might say you have failed for the lack of the second Cat, w/o actually testing emissions.
You're ussualy better off going somewhere else than trying to educate them. "Never try to teach a pig to sing. You waste your time, & annoy the pig!"
The real proof is whether you pass the emissions test. If you don't, you will now have to go w/ the two cat replacement. Magnaflow still sells the hi-capacity single cats, but they won't fly in Calimexiforia anymore.
Although if your new hi-capacity got installed, it should pass the actual emission test. If ya know what I mean.... Other than maybe the fresh welds, they don't know for sure how long it's been on there. Depends how particular the want to get. They don't make as much money being "particular". Bottom line is, if it passes the actual emmissions test.
Shouldn't be hard to find a shop to install it. If you purchased it somewhere else, they will only warranty the installation anyway, not function.

Ya we get mindless drones working the inspection stations not a clue about cars just a puppeteer showing the monkey what to do. They dont know any better, here in Jersey they open then hood of the vehicle to look at who knows what as if they had ever seen an open hood and what is actually under it.
But on the plus side, Jersey inspection only now requires emissions, so now I can go through with no doors sitting on a milk crate operating the throttle with a string and they cant say a thing.
