Question key cylinder in steering column '89 F150

I posted in electrical but maybe this is the place for this question. When I slip the key in to start the truck it's fine, but loose. When I turn it back towards me to the accessory position it won't turn on the accessories. If I change the cylinder, will that fix the accessory, or is this a problem with a contact inside the column, that I can get to when I remove the horn button assy? Thanks.

Not sure if it will fix the accessory or not but it's worth a try. When I bought my truck a few months ago I found out that the ignition lock cylinder was very worn...I didn't need a key to start or drive the vehicle. I replaced it with this http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...3701&ppt=C0334 and everything has worked fine ever since.

It was actually very easy to change with a narrow diameter screw driver (literally took about 2 minutes).

So, hopefully that could be part of your accessory problem. For $12.99 it's worth a try.

Another suggestion is that the ignition switch at the base of the column has gotten sloppy. Perhaps either the mounting is not secured, or the switch itself has worn out.

Mine failed earlier this year. Hadn't really noticed over the years, but after installing a new switch, the key roll was much tighter with definitive 'clicks' for each position - ACC-OFF-ON-START. While replacing the switch, it essentially fell apart.

Ok, for that price, it's worth it, since it's loose anyway. I'll put one in and see what happens. At least the key won't fall out, and maybe it will prevent a problem when I'm away from home . Thanks.

Ignition switch is the big white piece with all the wires (remove your lower dash panel). The key only moves a rod which moves the switch - No electrical on the key other than the buzzer
