Default '95 5.0 miss after replacing distributor

Been lurking on the forum for some time and found answers to several questions without having to ask, but have an issue I can't seem to solve.

'95 F150 4X4 5.0 California emissions with 220K. previous owner said engine and tranny completely rebuilt at roughly 180K. There is a Crane Cams sticker under the hood, so it likely has a mild cam in it.

The truck developed a intermittent dieing and crank no start issue which after searching the forum I decided was the pip sensor in the distributor. Replaced the dist. and sure enough it starts right up, but then had a miss when cruising at around 2,000 rpm that wasn't there before. I replaced the dist. cap, rotor and wires (upgraded Borg/Warner 8mm, not the cheapo generics) which didn't help, so thought I had a defective distributor and warrantied it out for another which didn't help.

Truck will also miss when revved up in park and is worse under load when dropped in gear and revved with brake applied. I have checked, double and triple checked timing (with spout removed;-), wires for firing order and routed properly to eliminate the infamous misfire configuration. I have pulled all plugs (only 5,000 mi on Platinums) checked gap and reinstalled. Plugs looked fine with no signs of fouling or unburned fuel on any cylinders.

Just bought some copper cores to replace them with in preparation of doing the timing bump if I can ever get this issue solved!

Also just bought the Innova Equus 3145 OBD1 code reader and the only error code it pulled was on the KOER with a 656, or Converter Clutch Control continuous slip error. KOEO was a code 11, or pass.

I just read elsewhere that one person experienced a similar missing problem and 656 code and it turned out to be the TPS.

OD light or CE is not flashing, but when the OD is disengaged on the road at 55 to 60 mph the truck seems to run much better once out of the 1,500 to 2,000 rpm range

I borrowed a compression gauge from a friend and will check compression tomorrow

Sorry for the novel length post, but wanted to cover all the bases

Thanks in advance for any help and thoughts or advice is much appreciated

I would also double check the firing order to see if it's for the regular 5.0 or the HO 5.0 since you think the cam has been replaced.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The firing order sticker under the hood is the HO firing order. That's how the wires were originally and how I put the new ones on. Just for grins I think I will try the non HO firing order though. Seems kind of odd to be a coincidence with replacing the distributor. No wires or other parts were changed when the dist was first installed and the miss appeared

Default Update

Pulled the plugs again and did a compression check. 150 to 155 pounds on all cylinders, so that was good news. Replaced the Platinum plugs with Autolite copper core and still had the miss. Put it in gear, set the brake and had a friend start pulling wires one at a time and found one of the brand new Borg/Warner wires bad. replaced it with one of the old ones and it improved a bunch, but still had a slight miss under load. Will take the wires back next week and pick up something different.

Any suggestions on a decent set of wires that won't break the bank?

MSD helicore wires with the MSD ProBillet distributor and MSD blaster coil is what I'm running...LOVE IT! NGK plugs! When it comes to your timing, I say keep the parts in the family...mixing and matching seems to disturb the combustion!

thanks for the help guys. I'll pull them off and trade them out for the MSD's or Accel next time I'm in town. I live about 30 miles from the nearest auto parts store, so it's not just a quick spin down the block, or across town to get what you need. On the plus side, it only takes me about 10 minutes to drag the boat to the nearest ramp on the lake and go fishing:-)
