i went through three starters i finally replaced the flywheel but ive gone through three more starters as well i get a new starter and solonoid it starts fine the firsst few times then the starter starts stickin i even turn the key off but the starter stays engaged until i tap the solonoid i dont know what it could be the flywheel is new and the solonoid mounted on the flywheel and starter have been replaced several times what could this be. I dont know what else to do HELP!!!!

Didn't catch year, make and engine. Were you using Motorcraft parts or aftermarket gyppo stuff? Do yourself a favor and get the real deal stuff. Is this a starter with the mechanical bendix or do you have the solenoid activated bendix mounted on the starter? Seems like a mute question but this info can help resolve the starter staying engaged.

You bought the parts store solenoid. It's junk. Buy a Motorcraft one from the dealer or junkyard. I went through 6 or 7 parts store solenoids before I finally got one from the junkyard and the sticking starter finally stopped.

could the problem have anything to with the ignition switch because when i start it with a screwdriver under the hood it starts fine no sticking or anything plzz help me i dont wana spend more than i have to

Well i think it's possible, and the problem might be in a starter relay (not solenoid) if there's any. I don't know much about starter circuit yet, i only know that my '93 truck has 2 solenoids in it and may be a relay to operate a fender-mounted solenoid. By the way - if you short a starter-mounted solenoid than probably that can be another one sticking, because when you use ignition switch, it uses both solenoids for starting.

its an 87 f150 302 2wd auto, it has a fender mounted starter solonoid

i believe it has a solonoid built ib to the starter as well but i do know there is one mounted on the fenderwell also i wouldnt think that the ignition switch is causing it to stick however ive been through quite a few solonoids so at this point im a little stumped??

I can't say it any better than this.

The starter doesn't have a solenoid on it, just the one on the inner fender.

When it fails to disengage have someone pull the Ign. wire from the solenoid. I think it should disengage implying failure of Ign, Switch contacts to separate after momentary contact for energizing starter relay. Or remove Ign. wire & measure voltage to ground, while someone turns switch to start position and releases multiple times. Voltage other than start position should not be seen

I am now on my 4th solenoid for 87 F150 4 X 4. My problem is exactly the same and happened again yesterday. The starter just won't quit cranking. I seldom drive this truck and the first 2 solenoids were bought at auto stores and never seemed to last very long (1-4 months) before the same problems came up again. The third solenoid I bought from the Ford dealer and it lasted about a year. Yesterday I went to the junk yard and got 2 solenoids that were original FoMoCo equipment. One is mounted and working and the other is in my glove box for security. At this rate I'm going to start looking for these original solenoids in other wrecking yards and hoarding them. Oh, I am also on my second starter in 14 months. The new starters bendix would not disengage and had my flywheel turning it. I was fortunate in having bought one with a lifetime warranty so it cost me nothing but my time. There are nothing but cheap replacement parts being sold these days.
