I have an 89 F150 with tilt steering. When I turn the key, it wouldn't start. I watched a youtube video that showed an actuator rod that slides along the steering column. When I took mine apart, that part that usually breaks was not broken, so I replaced the tumbler. Still doesn't work. All the parts move freely except the rod that moves along the steering column. It moves but takes quite a bit of pressure. Any help?

It sounds like your ignition switch isn't the problem. Did you check the starter relay? Is the power coming on in the truck i.e. radio, interior lights etc?

Did you check the actual switch on the bottom of the steering column?

Mine did the same thing and did you try lifting the steering wheel just a bit and it should engage and start. I refer to my truck like Biff's car in Back to the Future. No one can start it but me. I do have to check what was stated above.

Look at the ign switch itself, located at lower end of column near brake pedal. The rod goes up to the key tumbler, its possible the rod is full of dirt and debrie and difficult to slide. The actual ignition switch could also be very hard to move. You are in the right area.

Thanks for all the input. It turned out to be a very dirty and difficult to move ignition switch. When I replaced the tumbler, after trying to start the truck multiple times, the actuator that connects the rod to the tumbler snapped into three pieces. For $11 a new switch seemed like an easy decision since I was replacing all the other parts. All is now well.
