Simple, use what is recommended. Let them do their job and you keep yours.

i bought a 1975 chevy silverado 454 15 years ago. it had 38,000 miles on it and had 5 quarts of 20/50 castrol in the back. i stuck with using 20/50 castrol and didnt touch the engine until 300,000 miles, then installed a rebuilt. i have been using 20/50 castrol full syn. in my 90 f150 and wifes 70 mustang.

10/30 in all cars and trucks, don't care about brand really. Full synthetic Mobil 1 in the bikes. My 2 318ti's have 110k on the clock, explorer 213k, f150 has 2k on new engine (purchased with problem)

Use what's recommended. That amounts to 10W40 in the truck and the Jeep CJ 304, and 5W30 in the Pontiac for the temperature ranges experienced here.

Sure, there's been improvements in oil since these 80s vintage vehicles were produced, but still not willing to deviate from what the OEM states - if for nothing else, it's what they've been running on for 20+ years. Why screw with success?

As far as the dino vs. synthetic argument - I'm still biased towards the dino stuff - but the synthetic guys are getting some impressive results. Again - gets down to why screw with what's working for me?

I've been using a 5w-40 in my trucks, it is a synthetic CI or better rated oil. It meets the factory requirements and has a better sheer protection than most S rated oils. Newer S rated oil have lost their sheer protection because it was deemed unnecessary with today's modern engines. Those of us with pushrod engines are supposed to scrap our older vehicles and buy one with a modern overhead valve train and timing belts.

When I bought my truck, I asked what the owner had always used in it. 10w40. That's what I've stuck with. I've started using the Mobil or Castrol High Mileage stuff, and started using the Fram TG type filters rather than the Motorcraft brand that Ford puts out, and it seems to do a little better. Granted, i also use my truck to tow work trailers with mowers, mulch, sod, etc on it, so I think it is worth it. because of the age of my truck, I like to change my oil every 2000 miles or less. It's got 190,000 miles on it, and still runs like a champ. I want to keep it that way.

95 351w came from the factory with 5w20 synthetic blend.

With that said, i feel i would have to add a quart daily if i used oil that thin!
Hence i am now using 5 qts 10w40 and a quart of lucas.

IT all depends on what tempetures u live in also. I work in northen alberta where it gets to -40 and 10/30 dosn't cut it when its that cold. Now adays 90% of the oils are all good the main thing is that you change your oil on a regular basis.
