Idenifying 302 or Inline Six?
Hey Guys,
I'm a noobie with cars and trucks. I'm looking to get an 1989 Ford F150 XLT Lariat 4x4, and I need to ask, how do I know if it has a 302 or Inline Six? I don't want to get dicked over, but I do also want a truck that will last a long time and can take on deer
If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

V8= 2 valve covers, 2 exhaust manifolds--one on each side, will say 5.0 EFI on upper intake
I6= one exhaust manifold, one large valve cover....
if you must just google it, atleast then you would have a visual

here is a tore down version of a v8 notice the blocks v shape...
here is an inline six notice no v shape to the block. these are just basic distinctions to hopefulley help you. but in my opinion both are very good engines

The 300 six is a fantastic motor as is the 302 you cant go wrong. This is coming from a guy who owns a 1989 Ford F150 XLT Lariat 4x4 with a 300 and a 5speed that my dad ordered brand new. TONS of torque and power where you need it. Probably beat a 302 in a drag at least up to 65 or 70MPH. Its awesome.

Engine ****? I have a 302. But I've had 300's also. It seemed to me, my 300 pulled a little smoother, but maybe there was a gearing difference or difference in trailers being single & tandem axle. Whatever the reason, their my two fav's and having either in your truck will not prove to be a disappointment. I don't know if the extra weight, especially to your wallet at the pumps is worth what you get in return for the C.I.'s above 302 C.I. At that point, the choice becomes based very much, on specific intended use. In a perfect world, by all means, go for more C.I.'s! But in "my" perfect world, gas is free!
