Default I6 300 CID Engine in Work Truck

Hi Im looking at getting an older truck for around the farm. Mostly just plowin snow, towing a horse trailer once in a while and 4x4 for hunting. What do you all think about it as an engine for that type of work? Do you know what i can expect for Horsepower and Torque on a stock engine, as well as if i rebuilt it for more power what to expect? I don't need somethin to go racing in. just a solid dependable work truck with decent power. Also do you know of any books on Just the Ford Straight 6?

The straight six is a dependable low rpm engine, you will not see tons of horsepower but the torque will make up for it. You should be able to idle out of any situation that you come across with it, just don't be in a hurry.

the only concern I'd have is pulling a larger trailer. What size horse trailer do you plan on pulling?

2 or 3 horse. Not very often. It would be mostly for 4x4 Hunting and plowing snow. Its either get a cheaper old Ford Truck or go out and get a newer 04-08 F150.. but then who has the $$ right now for that

The 300 I6 will pull the trailer but it will be slow doing it, so don't expect to break any speed records. This is sorta like my 6.9 it will pull anything just not fast.

I regularly beat my 4.9 to within an inch of its life, and it keeps going. I pull a trailer every day, granted it's not a horse trailer but probably weighs at least as much as a single horse trailer with the horse in it. Then on top of that sometimes I'll load 1000-1500 pounds in the bed of the truck. It does it fine but not something I like doing every day, I do want it to stay alive for a while.

if you want to use the truck for work, you'd benefit from changing the gears to get a lower ratio. This would apply to any truck you get as well. I wouldn't be afraid of the 4.9 based on what you have said.
