I think I have a blown head gasket of 96 f150 straight 6
Well, I just got this truck a week ago. I noticed that it was low on coolant so I thought well I have a leak. Well we hooked the truck up to a trailer that had a couple of round bails of hay. I just moved it maybe a 100 yards. My dad noticed some water coming out of the exhaust and it was smoking some. Then as a moved another trailer about 100 yards the smoking got worse and worse. So, I thought to myself well now I know where the coolant is going. There isn't any water in the oil so I'm happy about that. I'm hoping that I don't have a cracked head. Unless anyone else has any other idea of what might be causing my coolant to be coming out the exhaust? Does anyone know the get step by step instruction on how to change out the head gasket on a 96 f150 maybe with pictures I'm a visual kind of guy. I figured somebody must have posted how to change a head gasket on the forum before.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the cooling system.
- If extra working space is desired, remove the hood.
- Remove the throttle body inlet tubes.
- Remove the air conditioning compressor.
- Remove the condenser.
- Disconnect the heater hoses from the water pump and coolant outlet housing.
- Remove the radiator.
- Remove the engine fan and fan drive, the water pump pulley and the drive belt.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable and retracting spring.
- Disconnect the power brake hose at the manifold.
- Disconnect the transmission kickdown rod on trucks with automatic transmission.
- Disconnect the muffler inlet pipe at the exhaust manifold. Pull the muffler inlet pipe down. Remove the gasket.
- Disconnect the EEC harness from all the sensors.
- Tag and disconnect all remaining wiring from the head and related components.
- Remove the alternator, leaving the wires connected and position it out of the way.
- Remove the air pump and bracket.
- Remove the power steering pump and position it out of the way with the hoses still connected.
- If the truck is equipped with an air compressor, bleed the two pressure lines and remove the compressor and bracket.
- Remove the valve cover.
- Loosen the rocker arm bolts so they can be pivoted out of the way. Remove the pushrods in sequence so that they can be identified and reinstalled in their original positions.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires at the spark plugs.
- Remove the cylinder head bolts and remove the cylinder head. Do not pry between the cylinder head and the block as the gasket surfaces maybe damaged
To install:
- Clean the head and block gasket surfaces. If the cylinder head was removed for a gasket change, check the flatness of the cylinder head and block.
- Position the gasket on the cylinder block.
- Install a new gasket on the flange of the muffler inlet pipe.
- Lift the cylinder head above the cylinder block and lower it into position using two head bolts installed through the head as guides.
- Coat the threads of the Nos. 1 and 6 bolts for the right side of the cylinder head with a small mount of water-resistant sealer. Oil the threads of the remaining bolts. Install, but do not tighten, two bolts at the opposite ends of the head to hold the head and gasket in position.
-
For 1996 models, tighten all bolts in numerical sequence in two steps:
Step 1: 45-55 ft. lbs. (61-74 Nm)
Step 2: Rotate all bolts an additional 80-100°
- Apply Lubriplate® to both ends of the pushrods and install them in their original positions.
- Apply Lubriplate® to both the fulcrum and seat and position the rocker arms on the valves and pushrods.
- Adjust the valves, as outlined below.
- Install the valve cover.
- Install the air compressor and bracket.
- Install the power steering pump.
- Install the air pump and bracket.
- Install the alternator.
- Connect all wiring at the head and related components.
- Connect the EEC harness to all the sensors.
- Connect the muffler inlet pipe at the exhaust manifold.
- Connect the transmission kickdown rod on trucks with automatic transmission.
- Connect the power brake hose at the manifold.
- Connect the accelerator cable and retracting spring.
- Install the water pump pulley, the engine fan and fan drive and the drive belt.
- Install the radiator.
- Connect the fuel line at the fuel pump.
- Connect the heater hoses at the water pump and coolant outlet housing.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Install the condenser.
- Install the air conditioning compressor.
- Install the throttle body inlet tubes.
- Fill and bleed the cooling system.
- Install the hood. If removed.

if you suspect the head gasket is blown pull the spark plugs...the cylinder using the water will have white deposits on the electrode...or Green if you use Anti-freeze....
clean plugs mean no water...perfect combustion produces water...if you are using Anti freeze you'll get a WHITE cloud that wont go away easily and smell very sweet....

Thanks, for the info!!! I thought of the same thing and before I realized about the blown head gasket I had a computer code it was giving me a cyl 2 error. I'm going to check all of them but I bet it is that one...
