Default I desperately need help. 1989 f150 ext cab 4.9 6 cyl

a little bit of info first. 1989 f150 xlt lariat super cab 4.9, 6 cyl. engine.
the rear fuel tank does not work.
my problem is severe sputtering during acceleration, no power on acceleration, severe shaking of entire truck. thought it was fuel related, but then someone told me to check catalytic converters. can't tell if they're plugged or not. want to replace them, but not sure if i should go to a single CC or get a direct fit with 2 CC's. I don't have access to a code reader, so I don't know what codes are causing this problem. Any and all advice or information, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you can spend $5 on a cheap multimeter or test light - You DO have access to a code reader. Read the sticky at the top of the 9th gen section on checking codes. Find your problem before you drop a dime on anything other than a multimeter or test light!

A fuel pressure gauge would also be a very good tool to check your pump
