if my check engine light is not on then would it still have codes? are there codes that dont make the CEL come on?

yes - many codes don't activate your CEL.

Not trying to be a pain but, I have the same setup. so i should be able to cross that connector with the red arrow with the connector on the top right of that pigtail and get my engine codes? 89 5.0 150 auto fi
trying to diagnose my idle surge.

the top left and the one right below it should be the ones. My harness has nothing below the one on the top right, so i would assume someone removed the single harness, but be sure. i had to reach under the plastic piece the big harness is pushed into to find the single wire.

i used a $30 code scanner from pepboys to get codes, but i had issues with deciphering the codes. the device has an audio tone that sounds when the light flashesa, so i decided to use a computer program on my laptop, to record the beeps and visually analyze them. made the task LOADS easier, plus i can easily save my scans
