what does it look like after the piece is off? is there holes?

Yes, there are holes in the tailgate under that piece. I think it has the Ford letters stamped under there too.

Six holes-1/2" diameter.

thanks to everyone that replied I did what you said and it worked. got both pieces and swapped them out today.
